Coca-Cola, J&J Remain atop ‘Power Brands’ List

Coca-Cola and Johnson & Johnson have maintained the #1 and #2 spots on a list of top companies with the most “Brand Power” in the US, according to CoreBrand, which released its 2008 Corporate Branding Index (pdf) this week. These highly regarded brands also held the same slots in the 2007 rankings.

After Coca-Cola and J&J, Harley-Davidson moved up one place to #3, replacing Hershey Foods, which is now #4, Corebrand said. Campbell Soup moved up one spot to #5, replacing Hallmark, which is now #6. UPS remained unchanged in 7th place, while Colgate- Palmolive moved up one spot to #8, replacing FedEx (now #9).

Out of the top 10, CoreBrand reports that only Kellogg Company (#10) has shown significant growth, rising from #15 in 2007 and from #21 in 2005.

Top 20 Brands

Notable within the top 20, BMW is now in 12th place and is rising fast. It was #16 in 2007 and #28 in 2005. Bayer, which moved into #17 from #27 in 2007 and #45 in 2005, is also moving quickly.

Economic Crisis Not Brand Crisis

“The current economic crisis is not a brand crisis. Corporate brands remain strong in the face of the downturn,” said James Gregory, CEO of CoreBrand “However, some strong brands are being run over by the economy because brands are not stronger than the underlying financials of a corporation. For example, GE has a relatively strong brand but has significant financial exposure so the brand is hurting.”

Additional details about company rankings:

  • Credit card company brands are improving: Visa is now #23, up from #36 in 2007 and #44 in 2005; MasterCard is #31, up from #44 in 2007 and #57 in 2005, and American Express is #11, up from #13 in 2007 and #16 in 2005.
  • Toiletries and cosmetics companies continue to see improvements: Revlon has rallied steadily from #61 in 2005 to #33 in 2008; L’Oreal has progressed from #89 in 2005 to #52 in 2008; and Estee Lauder has shown big gains, moving from #60 in 2005 to #34 in 2008.
  • Apparel was a mixed bag: While Levi Strauss dropped significantly from #20 in 2005 to #38 in 2007 to #49 in 2008, Fruit of the Loom moved up from #83 ]in 2005 to #43 in 2008, and Tommy Hilfiger improved from #88 in 2005 to #65 in 2008.
  • St. Jude Medical has moved up steadily to #28 in 2008 from #59 in 2005.

Biggest Drops in Rankings

Among companies that suffered setbacks in the rankings:

  • Starbucks had a notable loss as it dropped from #10 in 2007 to #14 in 2008.
  • PepsiCo has been dropping at an alarming rate and has gone from #4 in 2005 to #11 in 2007 and to #18 in 2008.
  • General Electric is losing steam, dropping from #12 in 2005 to #17 in 2007 to #24 place in 2008.
  • Procter & Gamble has dropped steadily from #31 in 2005 to #39 in 2008.
  • General Motors has fallen steadily from #30 in 2005 to #41 in 2008.

Apple Grows Big; Microsoft Up Slightly

Two of the most widely watched technology companies both improved this year. Microsoft’s efforts to bolster its presence have increased its brand rankings somewhat, according to CoreBrand. In 2005 Microsoft ranked #26, but dropped 28 spots to #59 in 2007, before improving this year to #54.

Apple continues to grow its corporate brand and now ranks at #91, up from #119 in 2007 and #128 in 2005.

“Last year there were many articles discussing how Apple should have been ranked as one of the top brands, but our Brand Power Ranking didn’t place the technology giant in the top 100,” said Gregory. “Everyone should be reminded that our study focuses on corporate brands, not product brands. While Apple brand zealots rate it with very high favorability, there are many more who don’t feel as strongly about the Apple corporate brand.”

About the research: The Corporate Branding Index is a quantitative research study among business decision makers in the US, and has been conducted continuously since 1990 with 1,200 companies across 49 industries. More than 12,000 surveys are completed each year. CoreBrand’s Brand Power rankings are based upon the “familiarity” and “favorability” of these business decision makers toward the corporate reputation of these companies. Respondents are business decision-makers (VP level and above) from the top 20% of US businesses across 49 industries.

6 Quick Tips To Optimize How You Monitor Your Digital Footprint

6 Quick Tips To Optimize How You Monitor Your Digital Footprint

Posted by Mitch Joel

A ton has been written and Blogged about what tools you should be using to monitor your digital footprint, personal brand and the products and services you represent (check out: Online Chatter – 6 Free Tools To Monitor What The Public Is Saying About You). It's nice to know what you should be using to do this, but what about how to use them most efficiently?

In the past few months several questions have crossed my inbox that lead me to believe that people do love the tools, but still feel like they are drinking a little too much from the fire hose. In order to best manage, use and optimize these tools, you have to get smarter at how you use them.

Here are: 6 Quick Tips To Optimize How You Monitor Your Digital Footprint:

1. Centralize everything. Whether you use a tool like Google Reader, Netvibes or My Yahoo!Google Alerts, Technorati all of these spaces enable you to set-up unique tabs or folders where you can bring all of your news and alerts into one, centralized location. Be sure to pull all of your watchlists, Blogs of interest and websites into one of these tools. With hundreds of Blogs and alerts set-up, it only takes a couple of minutes each day to glide through them when everything is in the same place.

2. Set up a schedule. If you're attitude is, "I'll get to it, when I get to it," you will never get to it. Schedule some time – every day - to go through your news and alerts. Every morning, right before you either start your day at home or at the office, is a great time. You might also want to consider replacing the watching of a semi-lame sitcom on TV with this activity as well.

3. Prioritize your flow. I used to have an "a-list" of Blogs, alerts and influencers set-up in Google Reader, but even that list got too unwieldy. By being very disciplined, I created a "*top" folder (the "*" ensures that it is the first folder at the top of my reader) with a very select few that are "must-see". Even when the day gets away from you, commit to looking at the most important sources of information as quickly as possible.

4. Multiple tabs in your web browser. All of the major web browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome) enable you to set-up multiple tabs when you open your browser. While this is super-annoying if you travel a lot and constantly have to log into a different web page, it is panacea for everyday use. My home button pops open Google Reader, Twitter, the Six Pixels of Separation Blog, Facebook, and a personalized Google News page. With a quick glance, you can really feel the pulse of what's going on without having to type in a bunch of URLs.

5. Tag it for later. Whether you're using Delicious, Google Bookmarks, or a tool like ReadBag, to best stay organized and optimized, you should be tagging content so you don't have to struggle to find it later. All three of these social bookmarking platforms allow you to share this information publicly or keep it private (as of late, I have been finding a ton of personal value in Google Bookmarks). Because anyone can tag anything with any word they want, think about optimizing your life by tagging content with words like, "print", "must read", etc… This way you're not only tagging the content to make it more findable, but you can also give it tags that help you make it more beneficial to your everyday work life.

6. Use email. I know many people are using the RSS capabilities of pulling news to stop the influx of email. With everything from alerts and notifications being RSS-enabled, it makes a lot of sense. But, if you travel a lot, and you're faced with delays, weird increments of time where you can't dig deep into a book or are even able to sit down and fire up your laptop, it's always good to have some content that you can quickly work through in your inbox on your iPhone or BlackBerry. Yes, some of it will be redundant, and yes it does add a small layer of extra work, but I can't tell you how many times, I've been on the road and was thankful to have a fistful of content bits in my email to go through.

How to Design the Opt-in Page Layout

How to Design the Opt-in Page Layout

Your opt-in page has the only purpose - to convert as many visitors as possible to subscribers. Therefore, the design, layout and copy of the opt-in page are of a great importance. Consider the following rules when creating your opt-in page:

  • Make it clean and simple. Your opt-in page design should be similar to that of the landing page. Create the opt-in page in the manner that it instills confidence, trust and value.
  • Show newsletter samples. If you have samples of your email newsletter, provide a link to the page where the subscriber can view the newsletter samples.
  • Use testimonials. If you have some testimonials from your readers, it’s wise to use them on your opt-in page. Use testimonials in pull-quote format, either text or as an image.
  • Offer incentives. This is a great way to increase conversion. Nowadays people are getting tons of marketing promotions, advertisements, sales letters, etc. and they are too cautious to give their permission for receiving messages from a new sender. And you should take this into account when creating your opt-in page and promise something of value to your future subscribers. Your promise may include:
  • special reports;
  • software trial;
  • tips & news;
  • discounts;
  • email mini-course;
  • e-zine subscription.

Every form is very effective in obtaining opt-ins. You are simply promising them an instant access to some free content in return for their name and email address. So, after the prospect opts-in, you give him a download link on your “Thank You” page or in the confirmation email he receives.

  • State your privacy policy. It’s important that you include 1 or 2 sentences about your privacy policy near the “Subscribe” button below the form. People must be sure that if they opt-in to your list, they will not start receiving all kinds of spam from other companies. You can place the statements like “we hate spam as much as you do”, “we will not share your email address with anyone”, “the information you provide will not be shared with a third party”, etc. to reassure your prospects and increase your opt-in rate.
  • Set the expectations. The opt-in page should set expectations for the recipient: frequency of the emails, possible other communications from your company. If you are using a double opt-in method, clearly explain your confirmation process.
